What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a document submitted with your CV; it introduces you to the employer and helps sell your application. A cover letter allows you to show your interest in the role and highlights how your skills and experience make you a strong candidate.

 

How to write a cover letter

Each cover letter needs to be tailored to the job that you are applying to, so there is no definitive structure, but in general, a cover letter should follow this format:

  1. Header – this should include your name and contact details, the date and the recipient’s name, and the company and company address.
  2. Greeting – if possible, address the letter to the person reading it; you can find this out by seeing who posted the job or by finding the hiring manager on the company’s ‘Meet the Team’ section or via LinkedIn. If this is not possible, you can start the letter with “Dear Hiring Manager”.
  3. Opening Statement – this explains why you are writing the letter. State the position you are applying for, how you found out about the role, when you’re available to start, and a brief statement on why you’d be a strong fit.
  4. Middle Paragraphs – highlight your most relevant skills and experiences, match them to the job description, and state how they would benefit the company. Explain what attracted you to this type of work and why you’re interested in working at their company.
  5. Closing Paragraph – reiterate your enthusiasm for the role and indicate your desire to discuss the position further (e.g. “I look forward to hearing from you”), mention any dates when you are unavailable and thank the reader.
  6. Sign off – use a professional closing such as “Best regards” or “Yours sincerely” followed by your name.

Don’t forget to check for spelling and grammar mistakes, and avoid repeating your CV. If sending it electronically, send it as a PDF.
